Jean-Francois Koenig raised awareness in public opinion for the need to preserve and restore the traditional architecture of Mauritius. Mostly built entirely in timber, those houses and their gardens often fell prey to either, land subdivisions, speculative development and restoration costs. Jean-Francois Koenig was responsible for assembling a team to bring to fruition, in a collaborative effort, the project of a book entitled ‘La Vie en Varangue’. Published in 1989, the book remains to this day a reference on the subject a well as having become a photographic record of some Mauritian buildings which have been demolished.
