Baldwins
Brackpan, South Africa
1982-1983

The Baldwins Steel, canteen and wash bay illustrates that on tight budgets, good industrial architecture can combine function and aesthetics. The wash bay has tubular purlins to provide water run-off and the structure is painted red to brighten the stark environment. The canteen meets the wish of management to treat the factory lunch break as an important part of the working day. The walls are in face brick providing low maintenance and the sapele laminated trusses are tensioned by steel cables to help reduce timber sizes.
